The emphasis is primarily on the soprano and tenor ranges, while the lower voices are given less prominence, and the selections predictably focus on the standard Italian and French operatic repertoire, with the occasional surprise, such as an aria from Lalo's Le Roi d'Ys.
Despite the nearly three and a half hours of music represented, this compilation will readily convert anyone who has not yet experienced the specially heightened, time-stopping expressivity – a power that transcends the mere song – which is the very essence of the aria. In several cases, this collection is likely to spark a desire to explore the larger operatic context. The lack of a booklet with text translations or artist biographies is frustrating, but this is nonetheless a good starting point for an overview of the mesmerizing power that extraordinary voices can wield.
